Prickly Pear 2

Acrylic on gessoboard - 14 x 11 in - 2014

This intriguingly- shaped prickly pear cactus grows in my back yard in Santa Fe. In this case, the actual plant forms are as I depicted them, resembling to me: a head and shoulders, a bicep, and a foot. Do you see the same forms…or something else?

I created the painting with multiple layers of acrylic on gesso board. In the second layer, I added texture with real sand from the arroyo nearby (the texture in the ground at the bottom of the painting). The darker shadows result from later over-painting in dark greys.
