After painting a larger work with hummingbirds (“Desert Birds”), I wanted to play with painting individual birds and species and to use a smaller format. I looked at my photo library, but then decided I needed to study online images since my cell phone hummingbird photos often showed a blur of activity but not too much detail!
Wanting to capture their energy, I decided to use an expressionistic rather than realistic approach to painting them. I created six small “portraits” with colorful acrylic paint and used white backgrounds to let the birds be the focus.
