These three cacti seemed to be standing at attention next to our gate. In the strong sunlight, they cast long and deep shadows, and the light passing through their spines contrasted with these shadows.
I painted them in textured acrylic on gesso board. To emphasize the drama of light and dark, as well as the many vertical lines, I magnified the shadows, brightened the highlights, and changed the greens.
